Anthony Manoli

d. May 31, 2026

Dr. Anthony Nicolas Manoli, passed peacefully, surrounded by his family, May 31, 2026, at his home in Great Barrington, MA. He was 95. Born in Cairo, Egypt, on May 13, 1931, he was the son of Nicolas Manoli and Emelie Antaki and was a beloved and respected son, brother, nephew, uncle, father and grandfather.

Tony attended the College des Freres school in Heliopolis and went on to study at Ain Shams University in Cairo. He excelled in academics and was a medal winning athlete in sports, playing volleyball, ping pong, and soccer (sometimes even on stilts). He received his medical degree and later traveled by ship to the US to pursue advanced medical studies in Philadelphia, Houston and Atlanta. He became a medical doctor of cardiovascular and thoracic surgery and eventually a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons.

He settled in New York City and practiced medicine at hospitals in Manhattan, Brooklyn, Queens and Yonkers. He was appointed Chief of Thoracic Surgery at The Brooklyn Hospital and Chief of Vascular Surgery at Wyckoff Heights Medical Center. At the Brooklyn Hospital he met his future wife Barbara Ann McKnight. She was the love of his life.

They set down roots in Malba, NY. It was there they raised their cherished children Marc, Nicole (Coco), Michel (Mike), and Matthew. At home Tony would photograph countless sunsets, garden, play tennis, organize poker games, sail, host barbecues and parties for his family, friends, neighbors and professional associates. He and Barbara entertained with grand soirees and Barbara would curate every detail. He and Barbara traveled the world with a great sense of adventure. Always at the ready to see the sights and dine the unusual. He savored it all, meeting the people, snapping photos and bringing interesting artifacts and great stories home. Upon retiring, he relocated to upstate NY. He was beloved there, like chosen family to many. With the birth of his granddaughter Amelia, who he adored, he eventually moved to Great Barrington, MA to be close to her and her parents, Marc and Carol Brunnschweiler.

He maintained a lifelong immersion and love of the Catholic Church, as lector at Holy Trinity in Whitestone, NY, St Mary's in Coxsackie, NY and the Church of Saint Patrick in Ravena, NY, was a Eucharistic minister and a lay Franciscan Brother. In the Berkshires he was an active member of St. Peter's in Great Barrington, MA and frequently attended daily Mass at The National Shrine of The Divine Mercy in Stockbridge, MA. For decades he made many retreats at St. Jospeh's Abbey with the Trappist monks of Spencer, MA.

Family meant everything to Tony. Frequently he visited his family in Montreal, Canada and Cairo, Egypt. They held a special place in his heart. You could catch Tony into his 90s playing ping pong, backgammon and May I, his favorite card game, and often still winning. Everyone relished a visit from Tony, right till his last days he would tell stories, recite poems, sing songs, expound on philosophy and religion, always with a twinkle in his eye.

Antoine, his given name, was known for his sense of humor, loving nature and kindness. He lived a grand life, yet in a humble way, and touched all he met. He will be lovingly remembered and cherished by many.
