David Alan Rhind

July 3, 1953 — December 25, 2018

David Alan Rhind, 65, a long time resident of Stockbridge, passed away peacefully on December 25 after a long illness.

David was born in Jacksonville, Florida, on July 3, 1953. His family moved to Stockbridge when he was a boy. David loved the outdoors, he was an excellent skier and drummer, and he spent a great deal of time on the Stockbridge Bowl.  One of David’s proudest moments happened on April 10, 1968, when David, 14, saw two men struggling in an overturned canoe. David found an old boat on shore and quickly rowed out to save the men’s lives. He was awarded a “Certificate of Merit” from the American National Red Cross for assisting in the rescue of Victor Newtown and Eugene Ulrich, two Jesuit novitiates living at Shadowbrook.  His quick and effective action helped save the victims lives

David graduated from the Culinary Institute of America in Hyde Park.  David was a chef at The Red Lion Inn for many years and was known for his award-winning apple pies, a favorite of the late Jane and Jack Fitzpatrick.  David was also a chef at the Morgan House in Lee while Maria Cole, the wife of Nat King Cole, ran the inn.

Later, David and friend Larry Haywood loaded up their van and moved to Breckenridge, Colorado.  While in Breckenridge they thoroughly enjoyed their wilderness experience. A few years later, David moved to Virginia Beach where he was recognized as “One of The Outstanding Chefs in Hampton Roads” in Virginia Beach.  While there, David also won offshore fishing awards. About ten years ago David returned to the Berkshires, where he was a chef at Canyon Ranch.

David was predeceased by his father, John H. Rhind, of Stockbridge and his mother Virginia Rhind, of Virginia Beach.

He leaves behind his sister Debbie (Curtis) Miller of Virginia Beach, brother Jay (Chantal) of Stockbridge, brother Kevin (Kathy) of Williamsburg, Virginia, and sister Laurie of Salem, New Hampshire, as well as nine nieces and nephews.
