Erik Schutz, 77, died on October 11, 2014 at his home on County Road in Sheffield after a courageous fight with cancer. He was born December 23, 1936 in Flushing, Queens. His parents, Ferdinand and Valborg, emigrated from Denmark. When Erik was a teenager the family moved from Flushing to New Marlborough where they purchased and renovated a beautiful farm house. Erik served in the Army Reserves from 1958 to 1964. Erik graduated from Mill River High School and studied at UMASS where he received a degree in animal husbandry. After graduation he worked for several years on the Willits Hackney horse farm before learning the family woodworking business. Erik became a skilled cabinet maker who specialized in restoration work. During his career he developed a loyal following of clients, many of whom became great friends. Erik and his wife Barbara worked side by side for the last 37 years. Erik's Furniture Shop will remain open; his family intends to carry on the family tradition of fine cabinetry and woodworking. Erik was an eternally happy soul. His personality was contagious; spreading laughter and engaging conversation wherever he went. He was blessed with an incredible group of friends. Erik is survived by his wife Barbara, his son Erik O.F. Schutz of Sheffield, his daughters Erin Schutz of Sheffield, Suzanne Schutz of Canaan, CT and Tina Schutz of Navarre, Florida; his grandchildren Erika and Christian Schutz of Sheffield and Joshua Tyler and Courtney Schutz of Navarre, Florida. Erik is also survived by his sister, Lillian Marcus of Macon, Georgia along with several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his brother Byron and two sisters Ethel and Dagmar.
