Joan Wood

Joan Sawyer Wood, 94, a former resident of Sheffield, MA, died early Tuesday morning, September 22, 2026, in Great Barrington, MA.

A native and lifelong resident of the Southern Berkshires, Joan was born on February 6, 1932, in Great Barrington, MA, the daughter of the late Harold Sawyer and Edna Sawyer McCormick. She was educated in local schools.

Joan worked for the former Zayre’s Department Store for 15 years and later for Country Curtains for eight years before retiring in 1997.

Joan enjoyed the simple pleasures in life, especially reading, knitting and watching the Boston Red Sox’s. Above all, she treasured time spent with her family.

Joan is survived by her five children, Shelly Zimboski and her husband John of Sheffield, MA; Sharon Kain and her husband Jeff of Myrtle Beach, SC; Melodie Potter and her husband Greg of Chatham, NY; Russell Wood III of Sheffield, MA; and Scott Wood of Scotia, NY. She also leaves several grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews.

Along with her parents, Joan was predeceased by her brothers, Gerald and Russell Sawyer; her sisters, Shirley Benson and Kathleen Sawyer; and her great-grandson, Noah Thompson.

SERVICES – Will be October 28th at Finnerty & Stevens Funeral Home, with family receiving friends starting at 10 am and service to start at 11 am.
