John Topping, Jr

July 11, 1946 — March 21, 2025

John William Topping Jr., affectionately known as “Topper”, passed away peacefully at the age of 78 on March 21, 2025 at his home. Topper was the beloved son of John and Della (Dickinson) Topping of Falls Village, CT.

Topper was a man whose heart was as big as his laugh, leaving an indelible mark on the lives of everyone he met. While at Housatonic Valley Regional High School, Topper was often seen around sightseeing or working on a car engine. Wherever there was a radiator, you'd find “Top” sitting on it to get warm. He was also a member of the apparatus club, psychology club and track.

After graduating high school, Topper proudly served in the U.S. Army, a chapter of his life that shaped the man he became. Known for his kindness, wit and wisdom. He later worked as a carpenter and roofer for many years, providing excellent craftsmanship around the Sheffield and Canaan area. His work was always top-notch, but his true joy came from spending time with family and friends.

He is survived by his step children: Tammy (Robert) Clark, Leon (Carrie) Stetson, and David (Kelly) Stetson, his sister Virginia “Ginny” Redlund, along with many grandchildren and great-grandchildren; all of whom brought him immeasurable joy.

Topper’s life was filled with passions that reflected his zest for living. He loved the camaraderie and challenge of a good round of golf, cherished the competition and fun of horseshoes, and could always be found enjoying a game of pool with a smile on his face. Long walks were his favorite pastime, allowing him to connect with nature and clear his mind. He had a special talent for spotting a good deal and loved to find ways to make life just a little sweeter. Not one to shy away from trying something new, he picked up pickleball just a couple of months ago, embracing it with the same enthusiasm he showed toward all his hobbies. He also loved playing ping pong, and the rhythmic bounce of the ball was followed by loud crashes and enthusiastic yells; a true reflection of the energy and excitement he brought to every game. Above all the most important part of these activities was sharing them with the people he loved. Whether it was competing in a game or simply enjoying the company of family and friends.

Sunday runs to the dump were a cherished adventure for his grandchildren, each trip filled with stories and laughter. His home-cooked meals will be deeply missed at every family gathering: his Christmas ham and potatoes, creamy mac and cheese, and signature strawberry shortcake were favorites. A passionate birder, he found joy in teaching his grandkids about the birds that visited his feeders and houses. Whether demonstrating the perfect golf swing or patiently sanding and staining an old wooden wardrobe in the garage, he shared his skills and wisdom with those he loved. His presence, guidance, and the simple moments spent together will be treasured forever.

He was always ready with a good story, a helping hand for any household project, and, of course, one of his well known phrases like, “Don’t be too rammy rammy” or “Add to lose, lose to gain.” His humor and wisdom will be fondly remembered by all who had the pleasure of hearing them.

Topper was predeceased by his beloved wife, Gloria (Pease) Topping, and stepson, Steven Michael Stetson, both whom he held close to his heart. His absence leaves a hole, but his legacy of laughter, love, and unwavering generosity live on.

A celebration of Topper’s life will be held at Finnerty & Stevens Funeral Home, 426 Main Street, Great Barrington, MA on April 11th, 2025, from 4:00-6:00 PM. Plans for an after gathering will be announced. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made  in his memory to the local V.F.W, American Legion Post Post 340, or his great-granddaughter's VFW Eagle Scout project, which will include a plaque honoring John.

Rest in peace, Topper. Your light continues to shine brightly in the hearts of all those that loved you.
