Joseph Cornelious Hammond

Joseph Cornelious Hammond, 86, died June 10, 2016 at Timberlyn East Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Great Barrington, Massachusetts.

Born on March 1, 1930 to Horace and Sarah Hammond in Exmore, VA, he was one of twelve children.

Joe Hammond as he was affectionately known, grew up in Oyster Bay, NY and was a star athlete at Oyster Bay High School.  After graduating, Joe served his country and was a proud U.S. Army veteran.  Joe was a resident of Locust Valley, NY with his family for many years before moving to Glen Cove and finally to upstate NY.

Joe Hammond was a well known and respected chef on Long Island.  Joe was celebrated most for being the head chef and acting at times as the maitre d’ of the Long Island landmark restaurant Steve’s Pier 1 in Bayville for decades.

Joe will be remembered for his love of family, his superb cooking skills as well as his sometimes explosive and humorous temper.  He will always be known for his catch phrase “Thanks for the warning!”

Joseph is survived by his sister Catherine Willett, his brother Milton (Pearl) and sister in law Thelma.

Joe is also survived by his children; David Jordan and his wife Sharon and their children Jessica and Stephanie, Velvet Grey Kearse and her husband Jonny and their children Jonny Jr. and Jason and Lori Smith and her children Kashonna Murphy and her husband Marlon and Andrea Smith-Ames and Doniyan Smith and his great grandson Nathaniel Murphy.

He was predeceased by his son Joel Hammond and nine of his siblings.
