Karen Gralla

January 16, 1950 — May 29, 2026

Monterey

Karen Christian Gralla, 76, died May 29th, 2026 at her home in Monterey.

Born in Danbury, CT on Jan. 16, 1950, daughter of Edna Mae Christian and Donald Joseph Christian, sister to Susan, and a few years later, sister to Sally. She attended West Springfield schools until starting college at UMASS Amherst, where she received her BA in English and later, her Master’s degree in Education.

In 1973, Karen moved to Berkshire County and started her career teaching English at Monument Mountain High School. For 35 years, she facilitated students’ introductions to Shakespeare, Greek Mythology, and American Literature, entering each new year with a renewed devotion to her trade and love of what challenges lay ahead.

It was at Monument where she met her future husband, James D. Gralla. After marrying, Karen and James moved Tyringham where they welcomed a son, Spenser. There, Karen continued her passion for gardening, sequestering several patches of land that would bloom year after year. In these gardens her many dogs would play, often trampling flowers, but forever welcome.

After the passing of her husband James in 2007, Karen retired from teaching and moved to Monterey, where she lived with her dog, Lottie. There, she cherished her time among her gardens, books, and her painting. Welcoming close and extended family, and friends new and old, Karen enjoyed entertaining at her home, as she did for all those years in Tyringham. She was also an avid traveler, visiting Europe, the Mediterranean, and Ireland several times during those years.

Karen will be remembered for her sense of humor and gigantic laugh. For her kindness and perseverance in the face of adversity. She was grateful for her life and for all who it touched, and those it touched are forever better for it.

She leaves behind her son, Spenser Christian Gralla of Monterey.

Services will be held on June 30th, 2026 at St. Ann’s church in Lenox, MA at 3:30pm.
