Lauren Ann Duryee Clark

Apr 23, 1971 — Jun 30, 2026

Pittsfield

Lauren Ann Duryee Clark, born April 23, 1971, in Great Barrington, Massachusetts, died after an extraordinarily courageous battle with esophageal cancer, surrounded by the unwavering love of her family.

Lauren is survived by her devoted husband, James ("Jim") Clark of Pittsfield; her loving mother, Nancy Duryee-Aas; her brothers, Burr Duryee and his wife, Debbie, Steven Duryee and his wife, Tati, and J.C. (John Clarke). She was predeceased by her father, Bill Duryee.

She also leaves behind the nieces and nephews who absolutely adored their Aunt Yaya: nephews Crispin and Oliver, and nieces Piper, Campbell, and Charlotte, along with many beloved aunts, uncles, cousins, dear friends, colleagues, and former students whose lives were forever enriched by knowing her.

Lauren spent her entire childhood in Southern Berkshire County. Berkshire School was an important part of Lauren's life. She grew up on the campus, and after attending Sheffield grammar and middle schools, she spent her high school years attending and subsequently, graduating from Berkshire School. In fact, years later, she and Jim would be married on the steps of Berkshire Hall. She earned a Bachelor of Arts in Education from St. Bonaventure University and later received her Master of Fine Arts from New Jersey City University.

Education was not simply Lauren's profession—it was her calling. She dedicated her life to helping others, particularly children who needed someone to believe in them. For 13 years, she worked in special education and therapeutic services at May Academy in Jersey City. In 2008, she returned to the Berkshires, where she continued her life's work teaching at Morningside School and Capeless Elementary School in Pittsfield until retiring this past June.

Long before she became a teacher, Lauren could often be found on the slopes of Ski Butternut, where she spent many winters as a ski instructor, sharing her love of skiing with others. She also cherished her childhood summers at the Twin Lakes Beach Club in Salisbury, CT.

To know Lauren was to know someone who always put others before herself. She gave freely of her time, her compassion, and her heart. Whether she was in the classroom, with family, or among friends, she naturally became a protector, mentor, and source of comfort. She was not only an exceptional educator but a mother figure to so many, offering encouragement, patience, and unconditional love to everyone fortunate enough to cross her path.

Her love for her family was fierce and unwavering. Nothing brought her greater joy than being surrounded by those she loved.

Lauren's final months were marked by an extraordinarily difficult battle with esophageal cancer. She endured tremendous pain with remarkable courage, supported every step of the way by her devoted husband, Jim, her brother J.C., and her mother, Nancy, whose love and care never left her side.

Cancer took much from Lauren, and she faced it with every emotion that such a cruel disease can bring. Yet even in the midst of her own struggle, her instinct to care for others never disappeared. She continued creating handmade gifts for family and friends, often sending Jim on missions to gather the supplies she needed. Even as her own world became smaller, she was still thinking about how to brighten someone else's.

After a lifetime spent lifting others up, Lauren was able to retire this past June, closing a remarkable career devoted to education, compassion, and service. It was a milestone she had earned through decades of selfless dedication to her students, colleagues, and community.

Lauren's greatest legacy is not found only in the classrooms where she taught, but in the countless lives she touched through her generosity, fierce loyalty, and unwavering love for others. She gave of herself until she simply could give no more. She will be profoundly missed, lovingly remembered, and forever carried in the hearts of all who knew and loved her.
