Lynn Humason Wood

January 12, 1942 — June 11, 2024

Lynn Humason Wood, formerly of Egremont, died at Kimball Farms Skilled Nursing Center in Lenox.  She was 82 years old.  Daughter of Charles A. Humason, Sr. and Lenora Elinor Barton, Lynn grew up in the town of Otis when it had a population of 450 people.  She was always proud of her small-town roots.  Her father owned the general store in the center of town, and her mother’s family ran the Maplewood on Route 8.  Growing up living and working in both establishments was perfect for Lynn, with her cheerful personality and bright smile.

Lynn was a graduate of the Northfield School for Girls, and of Keuka College.  For many years, she worked as a title abstractor, forming the company, Registry Research.  Most recently, she and her daughter worked as a team with their business, Dwelling in the Past, researching the pasts of Berkshire County’s historic homes.

Over a span of approximately 40 years, Lynn served the town of Egremont at different times as Town Clerk, Select Board Secretary and Planning Board Chair.  During her tenure as Planning Board Chair, Lynn was integrally involved in the preservation of the Jug End State Reservation.  She also chaired the St. James Community Housing Corporation in Great Barrington.  She was a motivating force in Friends of Egremont History, and in July of 2015 she worked, along with many others, to produce the town’s commemorative “1865 Civil War Basket Picnic.”  She was also the author/editor of the 1974 book, A Gift from the Past, Nellie E. Haskell’s History of Otis.  Always full of energy, she enjoyed theater, music, her garden, and the company of friends and family.

Lynn was married to William H. Wood, Jr. of Egremont for 60 years, until his death in 2022.  She was the twin sister of Larry Humason, Sr. of Myrtle Beach, South Carolina, who survives her.  Two children, William T. Wood II of Egremont, and Elisabeth L. Wood, wife of David S. Berman, of Egremont and Alexandria, Virginia also survive her; as do her five grandchildren, who she endlessly adored.
