Martin Leonard Lewis, beloved husband, father, grandfather, mentor, and friend, passed away on Monday May 18, 2026 surrounded by his family. He was born on July 7, 1949, to Ruth and Hyman Lewis and grew up in Sharon, Massachusetts with his brother Robert.
Marty graduated with a degree in Hotel Management from UMass Amherst, where he met his wife Sharon. They moved to New York City where they lived for 17 years. Marty learned his cooking skills at the Waldorf Astoria, Plaza Hotel, Regency Hotel and Le Chantilly Restaurant. They often traveled to Sandisfield for vacations and summers. Sandisfield became a special place for Marty. In 1989 they moved to the Berkshires with their three children and opened Martin’s Restaurant, which became a beloved local staple for 27 years. Beyond serving great food, with breakfast all day, Marty created community and a place to meet for locals and tourists alike. He was a mentor to many new cooking talents. He proudly sponsored countless local sports and youth athletic associations, including softball, baseball, soccer, and basketball. Known for his warm smile, welcoming presence, patience and kind demeanor, he was beloved by all who knew him.
Marty had an adventurous spirit and tireless work ethic. He loved cooking, being outside and riding his bike, especially with his children and grandchildren. He practiced Transcendental Meditation daily for over 50 years.
Above all else, Marty’s greatest passion was his wife and family. He shared 55 wonderful years with Sharon and was a devoted father to Joshua, David, and Jessica, and grandfather to Isabel, Jack, Henry, Maddy and Sammy.
Marty will be deeply missed. The family is grateful for all the happy years they had with him.
