Mary Blanchard Balle, devoted wife, mother, author, scholar, counselor, and cherished friend, passed away peacefully on May 22, 2026, at the age of 84.

Mary was an accomplished author and independent scholar whose work reflected her lifelong fascination with history, literature, and the human experience. She was best known for her definitive historical biography, Mary Lamb: An Extraordinary Life of Murder, Madness, and Literary Talent, a work that explored the intersections of mental health, literature, and the lives of remarkable women. Through her scholarship and writing, she gave voice to women whose brilliance, resilience, and accomplishments were often overshadowed by the men around them.

Mary was also the author of Ireland to Oz, another testament to her passion for historical research and storytelling. Her published works reflected her intellectual curiosity, meticulous research, and dedication to preserving stories that might otherwise be forgotten.

A passionate learner and advocate for understanding the human experience, Mary graduated from the University of South Florida and later earned a graduate degree in Rehabilitation Counseling from the University of Texas Southwestern Medical School. She continued her professional and personal growth through training in family therapy while living in London. During her years abroad, she lived near the historic home of the renowned literary siblings Charles and Mary Lamb. Inspired by Mary Lamb’s extraordinary and tragic life, Mary embarked on years of meticulous historical research that ultimately culminated in her acclaimed biography.

Beyond her academic and literary accomplishments, Mary was deeply devoted to her family, friends, and community. A native of Nashville, Tennessee, Mary met her first husband, Ezekiel F. Thomas, while attending the University of Georgia. They were married for 20 years and made their home in Sarasota, Florida, where they raised their two children, Kathryn and Ezekiel.

Mary later settled in Stockbridge, Massachusetts, where she found lasting love with her beloved husband, John “Jack” Balle. Married in 1985, they shared 25 wonderful years together, filled with travel, companionship, adventure, and countless cherished memories, until Jack’s passing in 2011.

Mary possessed a remarkable gift for hospitality and found great joy in bringing people together. She was a gracious hostess whose home was often filled with family and friends. Whether hosting an elegant dinner party or a casual gathering, she delighted in sharing good food, lively conversation, laughter, and stories from her travels. Her warmth, generosity, and genuine interest in others made everyone feel welcome and valued. The friendships she nurtured and the memories she created will be treasured by all who knew her.

Mary also embraced the Stockbridge community with enthusiasm and generosity. She volunteered with the Stockbridge Library, supported local organizations, and enjoyed the many cultural events that enriched the town she loved. Her community involvement reflected her lifelong belief in the importance of learning, connection, and service to others. Mary will be remembered for her intellect, compassion, curiosity, and unwavering commitment to understanding and celebrating the complexities of the human experience. She leaves behind a legacy of kindness, friendship, and a deep appreciation for literature, history, and the power of human connection.

Mary is lovingly remembered by her daughter, Jewel Kathryn Thomas-Dougherty, and son-in-law, Mike Dougherty, of Sarasota, Florida; her son, Ezekiel Fred Thomas III, and daughter-in-law, Tina Thomas, of Sarasota, Florida; her granddaughter, Tristian Thomas-Payne, and grandson-in-law, Devin Payne, of Sarasota, Florida; her great- grandson, Ty Payne; Rachel Portnoy, Franck Tessier, Jolyan Tessier, whom she lovingly cherished as her if he was her own grandson; and her brother, William Blanchard, and sister-in-law, Nancy Blanchard, of Lebanon, Tennessee. She was also dearly loved by many treasured friends and extended family members whose lives were enriched by her warmth, wisdom, generosity, and gift for friendship.

Mary was preceded in death by her beloved husband, John “Jack” G. Balle, and by her parents, William A. Blanchard and Jewel Blanchard Mason.

Her memory will live on in the hearts of those who loved her, and her legacy will endure through her scholarship, her friendships, and the countless lives she touched.
