Mike Hennessey broke free of the boundaries of earth on March 10, 2023 and headed straight for the heavens. If one of his biggest wishes came true, he was aboard the Starship Enterprise…
Michael George Hennessey was born August 7, 1946 to George A. Hennessey and Edna M. (Hassall) Hennessey in Bronx, NY. He spent most of his youth in the Bronx and Queens, NY.
As a young teen he moved to Egremont, MA to attend Kingsley Hall; a boy’s boarding school that is now Egremont’s Town Hall complex. His father passed a few years earlier, so his mother took the opportunity to settle the family’s affairs in NY then moved to Egremont with his younger brother.
Mike enlisted in the Navy upon graduation and after boot camp, on to Vietnam. He returned to Egremont, with his service completed, and worked many jobs to support his new young family.
In 1971, his dream of becoming a state trooper became reality. He served with pride for many years but a car accident, while on duty, forced and early retirement. He was able to use credentials acquired while in the Navy to be hired on to the N.O.A.H. ships and eventually sail with the military sealift command; i.e. the Merchant Marines. He went wherever a ship needed staffing. His travels are too many to list but he was great at sending postcards, pictures and presents from even the most exotic of places to us back home and we loved it!
Having sailed the time needed to fully retire, which he did, he continued living what he called, “Mike’s best life”. Read into that what you will. We still haven’t figured it out truthfully.
He was predeceased by his parents, younger brother Kevin, and his beloved black cats Finn and Molly.
He is survived by daughter Lisa Ecklund and her husband, Eric, daughter Jill Hennessey, grandchild Arlo Hennessey, niece Emily Hennessey and many friends far and wide.
As per his wishes there will be no local services. His remains will be placed on an active naval ship deployed out of Norfolk, VA and committed to the sea with a military funeral.
Donations in his memory can be made directly to any organization that benefits animal welfare.
Lastly, he would want nothing more than you getting together with friends, tell some jokes, tall tales (a Mike specialty to be sure!) and have a few laughs. A beer or four wouldn’t hurt either… God speed, Dad.
