Mildred Pevzner

Mildred Pevzner passed away peacefully in Kensington, Maryland on October 16, 2015. Born in Newburyport, Massachusetts on November 10, 1922, she was a daughter of Jacob and Dora Cohen. She graduated from Newburyport High School in 1940 and moved to Great Barrington after her marriage to Jack B. Pevzner in Roxbury, MA in 1946. In 1954, Mildred and her husband Jack founded Jack's Dept. Store in Lee, MA. In 1970, along with their son David, they opened Jack's Country Squire in Great Barrington. Millie, as she was most commonly known, was a long time member of Hevreh of Southern Berkshire, and previously a member of the Ahavath Shalom Synagogue and an active member in their Sisterhood. She was also a lifetime member of Hadassah. She was singularly devoted to her family and having spent most of her life in Great Barrington, she took great joy in the beauty of the Berkshires. Upon retirement, she and Jack spent winters in Lake Worth, Florida. Survivors include daughters: Lynne Kaplan (David Kaplan) of Kensington, MD; Paula Pevzner of NYC, Dr. Holly Schneider (Jeff Schneider) of Waban, MA and daughter-in-law Sue Pevzner of Great Barrington. Grandchildren include: Dan Pevzner, Matt Pevzner, Lisa Pevzner, Amy Pevzner, Rachel Reicher, Ben Kaplan, Aaron Greenwald, Marcus and Andrew Schneider. Great grandchildren: Victoria and Elizabeth Pevzner, Eli and Avi Reicher. Her husband, Jack, and her son, David, predeceased her. The funeral will be held on Monday October 19 at 1pm at Finnerty & Stevens Funeral Home. Burial will follow at Ahavath Sholom Cemetery. The family will be observing shiva at 40 South Street on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday 7-8 pm and in NYC on Thursday.
