Raymond E. Wilcox, Sr.

Mr. Raymond E. Wilcox, Sr., “Babe”, 100, of West Road in Alford died early Tuesday morning, January 10, 2017 at Fairview Commons in Great Barrington.
A native and lifelong resident of Alford, Raymond was born October 16, 1916 the youngest of five children of John and Jennie Buckbee Wilcox.  He was a graduate of the former Searles High School, class of 1935.
In 1921 the family moved to the farm on West Road. Raymond worked with his father on the farm later taking over ownership.  The feed and fertilizer salesmen soon discovered his was the best place to stop just before lunch time.  Ray and his wife, the late Beatrice Barry Wilcox, were known for always being able to make room for one more person at their table.  He was also known for a good glass of hard cider.
As an active member of his community Raymond was a former Alford Town Assessor, a former Town Moderator and was one of the founders of the Alford Pitch League.  He was also a member of the local Dairyman’s League.
Raymond is survived by his daughter Barbara Springer and husband Stephen of Silverton, OR, his son Raymond Wilcox, Jr. of Alford, MA and companion Marilyn Dempsey and two grandsons, Philip Springer and John Springer of San Francisco, CA.
He was predeceased by his wife, Beatrice on December 30, 1995.  The couple was married May 5, 1939 in the North Egremont Baptist Church Parsonage.  He was also predeceased by a granddaughter Lisa Springer, infant grandson, three brothers Harold, Charles and Frank Wilcox and his sister Bertha Drumm.
The funeral for Raymond E. Wilcox, Sr. will be held on Saturday, January 14th at 2:00 p.m. at the Alford Village Church, conducted by Rev. Charles VanAusdall.  Burial will follow at Alford Center Cemetery.
The family will receive friends on Friday, January 13th from 4:00 p.m. – 7:00 p.m. Finnerty & Stevens Funeral Home in Great Barrington.
