It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of our beloved mother, Rose Wellauer, at the age of 95. She was born in Lungern, Switzerland on August 15th, 1928 and lived a life filled with love, kindness, and grace.
Rose and her husband Hans Wellauer emigrated to the United States in 1955 and settled in Harwinton, CT where they raised their three children. After owning a bakery and working in the restaurant business for many years, Rose became a home health aide at Brooker Memorial. Caring for the sick and injured was her true passion. In 1976, Rose and Hans purchased the former Caesar’s Restaurant, renamed it Hans’ Restaurant, and moved their family to Great Barrington, MA. Together they built a thriving business and created a special gathering place for locals and visitors alike. After retiring from the restaurant business, Rose went back to caring for others as a home caregiver and babysitter extraordinaire.
Rose was a devoted mother and grandmother (Mimi) who dedicated her life to her family and anyone who needed her. She was the epitome of strength and resilience, and her warm smile and gentle spirit touched the hearts of everyone she met. Mimi had a passion for life and an adventurous spirit. She loved the ocean, the mountains and her beautiful garden. She loved all animals but had a special way with dogs and was often referred to as the dog whisperer. But her greatest love of all was her grandchildren. She cherished their visits and when they weren’t nearby, she enjoyed looking at their pictures.
Rose Wellauer is survived by her sister Trudy Staub, her sister Anni Muggli, her brother Hans Zumstein (Margaret), daughter, Deb Welch (Edward), her son Peter Wellauer (Lynn Comali) and her daughter Heidi Nejaime (James). She is also survived by her grandchildren, Jordan Wilson (Christopher), Alyssa O’Malley (Conor), Meagan Nejaime (John Caruso), Kayne Wellauer, Keegan Wellauer, Katrina Welch, and Victoria Welch.
She will be dearly missed and forever remembered for her unwavering love and the positive impact she made on our lives.
