Steven R. Kain

April 7, 1962 — December 1, 2018

Steven R. Kain, son of Harold R. Kain and Marie Böhm Kain, passed away on December 1st from a sudden illness. He was 56.

Steve was born in Lancaster, Pennsylvania, and he lived in Pennsylvania, Germany, Connecticut, and Massachusetts. He was a graduate of Hall High School in West Hartford, Connecticut, and took college courses in English Literature and Philosophy. An avid reader and voracious learner, he was knowledgeable on many subjects. Early in his career, Steve worked for Austin Organs, Inc., in Hartford, Connecticut, which served as an inspiration for him to devote himself to woodworking. For many years, he was a master craftsman furniture maker in Shaker and other furniture styles. One of his pieces was showcased in the Hancock Shaker Village in Pittsfield, Massachusetts, and for decades, he taught classes on woodworking in Connecticut and Massachusetts. Steve moved to Sheffield, Massachusetts in 2008, where he pursued his passions in gardening, antique trading, and bonsai horticulture. He and his wife loved traveling, particularly throughout New England and the Southeastern United States. Steve was an active member of the Sheffield and Great Barrington communities, and contributed in many ways to social activities and charities in the region.

He is survived by his wife, Melissa Kain of Sheffield; his father, Harold Kain of Greer, South Carolina; and his brother, Brian Kain of McDonough, Georgia.

A memorial service will be scheduled at a later date.
