Ted Portnoff, born Feodor Fedya Portnoff in Miami to Nina Safran Portnoff and Leo Portnoff, passed away on April 12, 2026.
He was raised in the Bronx following the early loss of his father, a noted violin teacher and composer. Ted went on to earn his master’s degree from the City College of New York, laying the foundation for a life marked by curiosity and craftsmanship.
Ted began his professional life in social services and job placement in the New York area. He later followed his passion for antiques, opening Bygone Days Antiques in the Berkshires. Over the years, the shop found three homes: first in South Egremont, on the property that now houses the post office; then in a barn in Sheffield beside the Old Covered Bridge; and finally in a distinctive blue barn on Route 7, just north of the Sheffield border. The shop became a destination, known for its remarkable inventory, rare finds, and memorable proprietor. A skilled craftsman, Ted restored and refinished countless pieces, tailoring them to his customers’ tastes. Many who visited his shop left not only with treasures, but with stories they carried for years.
In his later life, Ted discovered a deep love of salsa and ballroom dancing, becoming a cherished presence in the local dance community. The warmth and loyalty shown to him in his final days reflected the meaningful connections he formed on the dance floor. He is survived by his children, Todd and Lynn, and his grandchildren, Aaliyah, Aidan, and Clay.
